Battle of the Speed Demons: T-Mobile G2 versus Epic 4G

When we learned that the T-Mobile G2 would be coming with an 800MHz processor, many were disappointed, others declared they simply wouldn’t consider the device at all. Some defended the decision in that the G2 is the replacement for the 500MHz G1, not the 1000MHz Nexus One. Others defended the decision based on the newer processor and claiming that when it comes to speed “megahertz isn’t everything”. Now that we’ve actually got the device in-hand, how does it actually stack up? First impressions aren’t everything, but they’re fairly indicative of whether or not a device will be generally accepted. Based on that factor alone this device wins hands down. The speed and fluidity of the UI and the speed at which apps launch is noticeably faster than anything I’ve ever used before.

Speed Test: Flash vs HTML5 On The Nexus One

Unfortunately Android doesnt yet have flash support on its phones by OS default, but weve been assured over and over again that it is coming. While Apple disregards Flash on the iPad in favor of HTML5 (and to spite Adobe), the jury is still out and will be for some time on which is more efficient for rendering animation. Michael Chaize highlighted a test designed to determine which is currently faster on Android Flash or HTML5 by running some simple benchmarking animations on his Nexus One: At about 2 minutes and 20 seconds in, you can clearly see that Flash is the victor, rendering animated balls with shadows MUCH more quickly and smoothly than HTML5 with both running on the Nexus One. Furthermore, when testing the animation with Flash 10.1 on the Nexus One he gets 20fps, while Safari only runs the animation at 1-2fps on the iPhone 3GS with HTML5.
